June is Garage Door Safety Month. Since Overhead Door is the inventor of the upward-lifting garage door, we wanted to share some tips on maintaining the security and safety of your garage door.
Did you know that more than 70 percent of homeowners enter and exit through the garage? The garage is the most-often used entry point of the home, opening and closing an average of four times a day. That’s a lot foot traffic. It’s important to keep track of your garage door activity and ensure your garage door is well-maintained and functions safely.
Maintaining Garage Door Security
Managing the activity of your garage door is easy with OHD Anywhere™. With this application, you can control and monitor your garage door from anywhere. You can check if your garage door is open, closed or if there is any change to the door position. Know instantly when someone is operating your garage door, or open the door for anyone. Consider how great it would be for delivery, repair person or friends. All without having to provide the access password to your garage.
OHD Anywhere™ uses a sensor attached to the garage door. This is an important security advantage. Other systems monitor the opener, instead of the garage door position. The system alerts you whether the door changes to the fully open or closed position. Even if the door is operated manually by disengaging the door from the opener, you are notified.
OHD Anywhere™ delivers convenience, control, peace-of-mind and safety all in the palm of your hand. Another great tip: while on vacation, unplug the garage door opener unit. Or, use the vacation lock security switch on the wall console. This feature renders remotes unusable and is an optional accessory to most openers.
Garage Door Safety Tips:
- Keeping your garage door in working order is also important to safety. First, test the reversing mechanism by placing a 2-inch by 4-inch board in the door’s path. If the door does not reverse after contacting the object, call us or schedule a repair online.
- If the opener has not been replaced since 1993, replace the garage door opener with a new one that has safety beams and auto-reverse as a standard feature.
- All garage door owners should make sure that their little ones are kept safe when playing in or around garages. Make sure the garage door opener control button is out of the reach of children. Also, do not let them play with garage door remote controls.
- Visually inspect the garage door for wear and tear. Pay particular attention to springs, cables, rollers and pulleys. Do not attempt to remove, adjust or repair these parts or anything attached to them. These parts are under high tension and should be fixed only by a trained garage door professional.
If you find there is an issue with your garage door or opener, make sure you contact us for service. Our garage door repair professionals are fully trained on how to properly (and safely) fix your garage doors.
Legacy Garage Door Openers: Industry leading openers and….ideal home for a family of doves?
This was too funny not to share.
We love getting emails and photos from our happy customers proudly showing their new garage doors, entry doors and garage door openers. Recently a customer emailed us to share a photo of their Legacy Garage Door Opener. The difference in this photo was that a family of doves had decided to make their home on top of the opener! We always brag about how quiet our garage door openers are but we’ve never been given such a solid endorsement from a family decided to set up camp right there!
Thanks to Brenda S. for sharing!

Overhead Door Earns Women’s Choice Award® for Providing Outstanding Customer Experience For the Fifth Year in a row
As the leading advocacy for female consumers, WomenCertified® is delighted to honor Overhead Door with the Women’s Choice Award® based on extraordinary recommendations from their female customers in a customer satisfaction survey conducted by WomenCertified Inc. using the company’s customer database. Overhead Door, which provides door and door related products and services, received excellent survey scores in several areas including the overall sales experience where 9 out of 10 of their female customers reported that they would highly recommend Overhead Door to friends and family.
Female consumers represent a driving economic powerhouse, controlling 65%, or approximately $20 trillion annually, in global spending and more than 80% of US spending, according to the Harvard Business Review and the Continuum’s Women and Children Research Group. Coupling that with a recent Nielsen report on global trust in advertising, which stated that 92% of consumers trust recommendations from people they know over any other form of advertising, reveals the significance of being an America’s Most Recommended brand by women.
The Women’s Choice Award has set the standard for helping women make smarter choices by identifying the brands most recommended and trusted by women. Overhead Door is a brand that delivers a customer experience worthy of her recommendation.
Passi commented on how the Women’s Choice Award serves as a competitive differentiator in today’s cluttered marketplace by explaining, “When a woman is willing to recommend a brand or service to others, it means that business has earned her loyalty. Those are the businesses we wish to recognize for their efforts and commitment to the number one consumer – women. We are proud of Overhead Door for providing a remarkable roofing experience and for creating a service experience that is exceptional for both women and men alike.”
About Women’s Choice Award
The Women’s Choice Award sets the standard for helping women to make smarter purchasing choices. The company and its awards identify the brands, products, and services that are most recommended and trusted by women. Additionally, they recognize those that deliver a recommendation-worthy customer experience. Awards are based on surveys of thousands of women, as well as research conducted in partnership with the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. As the leading advocate for female consumers, WomenCertified Inc., home of the Women’s Choice Award, created the first national award based on the ratings and preferences of women. Women can visit the official website at www.WomensChoiceAward.com to learn more.
If we told you that someone in your area had been convicted of nine counts residential burglary and nine counts of theft, you’d glad to know that person was sentenced to 10+ years in state prison…right?
What if we told you that the person guilty of these crimes was a technician for a garage door repair company who intentionally overcharged his customers so much, it was considered a felony?
You’d expect that such behavior would be discouraged from a garage door repair company, correct?
According to a fellow employee of the company, this technician made more than $300,000 for himself in 2015 and was even awarded a trip from his company as praise as for being a “top gun” with such large invoices.
Check out this article from DASMA in this link HERE with further details from this technician working with what has been called “The worst garage door company in the nation” by DASMA in a previous article from 2015.

In the fourth installment our series on garage door repair scams we are talking about ways you can determine a scam company simply from your interaction on the phone before they even have a chance to waste your time and possibly money with a visit.
Here are some things to listen for:
If the company is unclear or inconsistent on their company name: Beware. This is an attempt to distract and confuse you so you can’t properly identify them later. They may even use names similar to ours and other reputable companies, so ask for clarification.
Generic names like “Garage Doors” or “Door Service” should be huge red flags. Remember, If they truly want long time customers instead of a quick buck they will make sure to let you know who they are!
As we’ve mentioned before, our own company is often a victim of scam companies using a name similar to ours to latch on to our hard earned reputation. For this reason, we always encourage our customers to play close attention to the name and website of the repair company they are choosing!
Make sure to clarify their street address that you’ve verified on their website. If you have billing issues you’ll want to know exactly who to contact and where, so make sure a physical address exists before doing business with the company.
Check Reputable Dealer Databases
DASMA (or Doors & Access Systems Manufacturers Association ) is a great resource for determining fair pricing and service for popular door products.
The third part in our four part series from the International Door Association on garage door repair scams is about identifying the marketing tactics of a scam company.
Scam companies know how susceptible consumers are to marketing, so they put a great deal of emphasis in this area.
Here are some warning signs to look out for:
Keep an eye out for generic or confusing names, especially ones in ads that don’t match their company’s website. As you may or may not know, our own company is a victim of scam companies using a similar name to latch on to our hard earned reputation. For this reason, we always encourage our customers to play close attention to the name and website of the repair company they are choosing.
Check the company’s street address since most scam company’s don’t operate at a physical location. Be sure to also check the street view of the address to make sure it’s not disguised to exist inside of a larger building that may not actually be there
Low Prices For Service Calls
Scam companies know that a desperate customer is their best target. Be wary of a low upfront service visit fee meant to reel customers into much larger costs in the long run.
Look for Logos From Reputable Associations
The International Door Association (or IDA) and IDEA (The Institute of Door Dealer Education and Accreditation) are both associations with the intention of helping you identify reputable companies from others. Look for these logos on company websites to be sure:

Friday, March 24th, Team Impact St. Louis held our annual American Red Cross Blood Drive. The event was chaired by Kecia Williams and she diligently sought donors to almost double our previous year’s donation. We were able to provide 23 units of blood to the American Red Cross. Our goal was to have 15 people volunteer and we far exceeded that number! We came together to donate blood and save lives.
According to an estimate from The American Red Cross, the amount we donated could potentially save 66 lives just from our donations! It was a great success in the St. Louis office.
The free juice and cookies given out afterward were just a bonus!
